A dental treatment trip has one feature few people consider before leaving: free time. Hours pass between appointments, sometimes whole days. And if you travel with a companion, which we recommend for the bigger procedures, that person has all of that time to fill. This guide is for both of you.
The Centre, on Foot from Your Hotel
Central Tirana is comfortably walkable. From Skanderbeg Square, with the National History Museum and its great mosaic, you reach in a few minutes Bunk’Art 2 (the communist-era bunker turned museum, intense, and worth it), the Clock Tower, the Et’hem Bey mosque, and the Pyramid of Tirana, now restored and climbable, with a view over the city.
The Blloku district, once reserved for the regime’s elite, today full of cafés and restaurants, is the place for the evening. The prices will surprise you: a full dinner at a good restaurant costs what a starter does in Milan or London.
If You Have a Whole Day
- The Dajti cable car: 15 minutes in the cabin and you are at 1,600 metres with Tirana at your feet. Half a day well spent.
- Durrës: the sea and a Roman amphitheatre, 40 minutes by car.
- Kruja: Skanderbeg’s castle and the Ottoman bazaar, an hour away. The classic history trip.
- Berat, “the town of a thousand windows” (UNESCO World Heritage): further out, but doable in a day if your clinical schedule allows.
Your coordinator knows your clinical calendar better than anyone: ask them which trip fits and which doesn’t. Arranging a car with a driver is inexpensive and takes one message.
What to Do (and Not Do) After Surgery
Here the travel guide hands over to the doctors, because the two have to work together:
- The first day after surgery: rest, no exertion, no prolonged direct sun. A quiet walk in the centre is fine; the cable car and excursions are not.
- Food: in the first days choose soft, lukewarm dishes. Albanian cuisine helps: soups, purées, baked fish, yogurt. Avoid shellfish in the shell, very crusty bread and piping-hot food.
- Alcohol and smoking: avoid them in the days after surgery, they slow healing. The raki can wait for the second trip.
- For the companion: no restrictions at all. It is the perfect moment for the excursions while the patient rests.
The Practical Details
- Language: Italian is understood almost everywhere in Tirana; English too. Your coordinator remains reachable for anything regardless.
- Currency: the Albanian lek. Euros are accepted in many places, but paying in lek is better value. Cards work everywhere in the city.
- Documents: EU citizens can enter with a valid national ID card; others need a passport.
- Transfers: airport-hotel-clinic is handled by us, included in your treatment. Beyond that, city taxis cost very little.
